There are many things that make Smith Mountain Lake special for Cindy Clark of Moneta. The area, she said, is “practically perfect,” and cited the views of the lake and the mountains that, when pieced together, make it a great place to live.
And that is just what Clark did, literally. Clark, a longtime quilter, has pieced together scenes of SML into a 50th anniversary quilt that is being raffled by the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“The quilt started out as a ‘block of the month’ class I was teaching for Lake Quilters Guild,” Clark said. “I meant it to be illusionary of the lake and everything you see in the area.”
The quilt includes various landscape pictures, including trees, mountains and the lake, as well as quilt patterns that allude to the lake, such as log cabin and flying geese patterns.

The chamber is selling raffle tickets for $5 apiece at the Visitors Center at Bridgewater Plaza. The drawing will be held March 7, 2016 with proceeds benefiting the 50th anniversary planning efforts.
The Lake Quilters Guild is also celebrating a milestone this year — it’s group’s 25th anniversary.
Sue Palmer, guild president, explained that the 50th anniversary quilt is just one of many charity projects that the 140-plus member guild does each month.
“We are noted for our charity work,” Palmer said.
The guild makes teddy bears, dolls, lap quilts, baby quilts, Christmas stockings, senior citizen bibs, wheelchair bags, walker bags and more, she added. These items are donated to shelters, emergency rooms and police departments (police officers can hand out bears to young accident victims to comfort them).
“We also donate bears to nursing homes,” Palmer said. “There has been some evidence that patients with Alzheimer’s are comforted by the bears.”
The Lake Quilters Guild meets every fourth Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, 40 Lakemount Drive, in Moneta. The meetings are open to beginners, with monthly classes, as well as more experienced quilters.
