Mississippi man dies in wakeboarding incident Saturday

A Mississippi man died while visiting with friends at Smith Mountain Lake on Saturday afternoon.

Max Bouldin, 23, was wakeboarding in the Blackwater channel of the lake near Belle Isle Road when he fell off the board, according to Sgt. Timothy Dooley with the Department of Wildlife Resources.

When friends in the boat came around to pick him up, Bouldin was unconscious, he said.

Dooley said friends attempted to perform CPR, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

A medical examiner is currently determining whether Bouldin died from a drowning or other medical emergency. The results are expected within the next few days.

Bouldin was wearing a life jacket during the time of the incident, Dooley said.

Saturday’s incident will mark the first fatality on Smith Mountain Lake since 2018. That year, a 2-year-old boy from Texas drowned after falling from a dock.

The last boating related fatality occurred in 2016 when a 17-year-old girl was killed in a collision of a boat and a personal watercraft.
